The Central Board of Direct Tax (CBDT) had issued a JSON utility to file Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for Assessment Year 2021-22. Currently, the JSON utility is enabled only for forms ITR-1 & ITR-4. The CBDT will enable JSON utility for other ITR forms as well in the next releases. The excel or Java version of utilities has been replaced with JSON utility.
What is JSON Utility?
The CBDT issued JSON utility to provide ease to taxpayers to file their returns. The JSON utility allows you to import and pre-fill information from the e-filing portal. You can fill the respective information in the balance data. You can also edit the entire profile data except the information regarding PAN in the utility.
The facility to upload ITR on the e-filing portal is not enabled via JSON utility. You can fill and save it either within the utility or export output JSON file to your system. Once the filing is enabled, you can upload the same at the e-filing portal.
What are the pre-requirements of JSON Utility?
To download JSON utility, following things should be available in your system such as;
- OS: Windows 7 or later are supported,
- Processor: Intel Pentium 4 processor or later, that is SSE2 capable or AMD K10 or above core architecture,
- RAM: 1.5GB of RAM or more,
- HDD: 500MB or more of free space.
What is the step-by-step procedure to download JSON Utility?
Step 1: Visit the Income Tax e-Filing Portal via a link given below;
Step 2: Under Download click on the “IT Return Preparation Software”
Step 3: Under JSON utilities click on the given link
Step 4: After clicking on the link, the zip folder will start to download in your system
Step 5: Once the zip folder is downloaded, open the utility from that folder and then you will receive a notification then click on “Run Anyway”
Step 6: After selecting “Run Anyway” your ITR Utility will start installing
Step 7: Once you installed the utility, the below image will come.Then click on “Continue”.
Step 8: That’s it, you are done. From here you will be able to file your Income Tax Return for AY 2021-22.
